Gwen Sampé is a jazz singer for whom the art of improvising is an integral and indispensable part of her musical soundscape. Born into a family of singers in Houston, Texas her approach to jazz singing is rooted in the past yet unapologetically modern.

Nurtured on John Coltrane and Betty Carter, she brings surprise and daring to her performances. Her artistic background is rich and diverse. As well performing on the jazz circuit, from Jazz Standards to SlamJazz performances, she also performs in, sometimes as both director and performer, contemporary mixed media theatre pieces, including a self-produced one woman show, “From the Fields to the Concert Hall.”

Harry Swift

Né en Angleterre en 1948, Harry Swift découvre à l’âge de 15 ans la musique de Charles Mingus qui ne cessera de le passionner. Musicien autodidacte au départ, et devenu parisien dès 1980, il perfectionne sa pratique de l’instrument auprès de contrebassistes-enseignants prestigieux tels que Jaxques Cazauran et François Rabbath. Tour au long de sa carrière, Harry Swift connait des expériences musicales riches et originales principalement avec des musiciens américains : Steve Lacy, Kirk Lightsey, Mal Waldron, Bill Hardman, Sunny Murray, Joe Lee Wilson, Annette Lowman, Noah Howard, Rick Ford, Benny Golson,… A partir de 1995, il se produit en trio avec Jon Handelsman (saxophones) et Jean-Claude Montredon (batterie). Par ailleurs et pendant plus de quinze ans, il joue du choro brésilien avec la pianiste maria-Inès Guimaraes et d’autres musiciens brésiliens. Harry Swift est aussi compositeur et arrangeur : ses compostions sont régulièrement jouées par les groupes dont il fait partie. Depuis 1985, il est le contrebassiste et complice du pianiste Bobby Few qu’il accompagne au gré de diverses formations : du duo au septet.
